Same flex letter, completely different behavior — here's why.
Ask two golfers what "stiff flex" means and you'll usually get an answer about overall firmness. But two stiff-flex shafts can bend in completely different places along their length, and that location — the kick point — often matters more to ball flight than the overall flex rating does.
What Kick Point Actually Describes
Kick point refers to where a shaft bends the most during the loading and release phase of the downswing. A low kick point concentrates bend closer to the tip, which tends to help the clubhead square up earlier and launch the ball higher. A high kick point keeps more of the shaft's stiffness near the tip, generally producing a flatter, more penetrating flight with a firmer feel at impact.
Why Two "Stiff" Shafts Can Play Nothing Alike
Overall flex is really an average of stiffness along the entire shaft, but kick point describes where that stiffness is concentrated. Two shafts can average out to the same flex rating while one has a distinctly lower kick point than the other — which explains why golfers sometimes hit a shaft labeled identically to their current one and feel like they're swinging something completely different.
Flex tells you how much a shaft bends on average. Kick point tells you where. Ignoring one while only chasing the other is how mismatched fittings happen.
Matching Kick Point to a Real Miss
Golfers who struggle with low, knuckling shots are frequently better served by a lower kick point, even if their overall flex rating stays the same as before. Golfers who balloon shots in the wind often benefit from the opposite — a higher kick point that keeps spin and launch from climbing too high, again without necessarily changing the flex letter at all.
The Takeaway
If a shaft change hasn't solved a persistent ball flight issue, the flex label alone probably isn't the reason. Kick point is worth checking specifically, since it's entirely possible to try three "stiff" shafts in a row and never test the one variable that actually needed to change.
