Shaft Torque, Explained
Lower isn't automatically better — torque is about matching, not minimizing.
Torque shows up on almost every shaft spec sheet as a single number, usually somewhere between 2.5 and 6 degrees, and it gets treated as a simple "lower is better for better players" rule more often than it deserves. The real picture is more specific than that.
What Torque Actually Measures
Torque describes how much a shaft twists around its own axis when a rotational load is applied — essentially how resistant it is to twisting rather than bending. It's measured in degrees: the amount of rotation recorded when a fixed torque is applied to a clamped shaft.
Why Lower Torque Isn't a Universal Upgrade
Lower-torque shafts resist twisting more, which can help maintain face control for golfers with fast, aggressive transitions who might otherwise fight some instability at impact. But that same stiffness against twisting can feel harsh and lifeless to a golfer with a smoother tempo, who may actually benefit from a bit more torque to add feel and help the face release naturally through impact.
Torque isn't a scoreboard where a lower number always wins. It's a matching problem, the same as flex or kick point.
How Torque Interacts With Everything Else
Torque doesn't operate in isolation. A shaft with low torque but the wrong kick point for your swing won't feel any better than one with the "right" torque number and the wrong bend profile. On the board, we test torque alongside frequency and deflection together, since evaluating it on its own tells only part of the story.

If you've been told to chase the lowest torque number you can find, it's worth reconsidering that advice against your actual tempo and transition style. The right torque is the one that matches how you load and release the club, not simply the smallest number on the spec sheet.
